"SAFE PASSAGE", new full length album announced! Due out on 9/27 on Black Mesa Records!

"SAFE PASSAGE", new full length album announced! Due out on 9/27 on Black Mesa Records!

My new full-length album, “Safe Passage”, is slated for release on September 27, via Black Mesa Records. These are the most hopeful songs I’ve written yet, and I hope they bring a kind of comfort to anyone moving down their path towards truth and happiness and safety for themselves and those they hold dear.

The recordings feature some stellar souls and special moments that we all captured to tape in the winter of 2018 down in Austin, Texas.

The first single was announced by Wide Open Country, calling the song "hopeful...spirited" and you can listen right here: https://www.wideopencountry.com/john-calvin-abney-turn-again-safe-passage/

"Ten new songs by a master of folk-country" - Americana UK

"This first single [Turn Again] is lights out" - Hear Ya

As of right now, you can pre-order the 180g audiophile black vinyl along with the CD here at: https://blackmesarecords.com/…/safe-passage-12lp-black-vinyl

Take care and safe passage to you and yours.

With love,
John

new full length being mastered, studio work abounds, and wrapping up the winter.

Hello, family.

John has been quite busy (as always) in the studio and on the highways. Recently, he has been taking the helm as producer and co-arranger for new albums coming from St. Louis alt-country songwriter Beth Bombara and Austin-via-Athens roots rocker Drew Carman, while continuing to work on his own follow-up to 2018's dream folk album Coyote. Additionally, he is assisting friend, collaborator, and super-songwriter John Moreland with his new collection of songs being tracked at the grand Echo Lab in Denton, TX.

After pulling together a group of stellar players from the western side of Oklahoma, JCA and the boys supported St. Paul and the Broken Bones at the legendary Cain's Ballroom in Tulsa, OK, to nearly 1500 people, playing through songs from Far Cries and Close Calls, Coyote, and brand new tunes slated for the upcoming album. An amazing opportunity and wonderful crowd, thank you for showing up early for the home-town folks.

The end of March will be leading John to Nashville as he records a pair of songs co-written with fiddle player, arranger, and singer-songwriter Megan Palmer (also featured on many of John's recordings) at Magnetic Audio on the eastern side. These songs will be featured on a 7" vinyl in the near future.

Coming this May, John will be temporarily joining Lee Bains and the Glory Fires on lead guitar for their European tour:

May 5 - Hertogenbosch, NL
May 6 - Zwolle, NL
May 7 - Amsterdam, NL
May 8 - Den Haag, NL
May 9 - Hengelo, NL

May 15 - Madrid, Spain
May 16 - Zaragoza, Spain
May 17 - Avilés, Spain
May 18 - Liérganes, Spain

Check out the Glory Fires website for ticket info.

Keep moving forward, stay in the light, give love freely, and always remember that what we see as a storm may be soft rain after all. kind days are coming.

New limited 7" split vinyl with Samantha Crain and an update for autumn solo performances.

New limited 7" split vinyl with Samantha Crain and an update for autumn solo performances.

For the first release of the Clerestory split 7” series, Samantha Crain recorded a stunning version of the traditional song “Wild Mountain Thyme”, and John Calvin Abney covered the John Hartford classic “First Girl I Loved”. Both songs were collaborative, with John adding guitar and other instrumentation to Samantha’s track, and Samantha providing background vocals for John’s track. Recorded in Oklahoma City at Stowaway Recording, the songs came together easily and calmly in the springtime of 2018. You can preorder the limited (300 exist only!) seafoam green 7" vinyl HERE from Clerestory AV's website.

John has a whole set of shows coming up in the month of October including:

October 12-13: Tahlequah, OK - Illinois River Jam (with Travis Linville, Samantha Crain, The Creek Rocks, Owen Temple, Courtney Patton, and many more)

October 16: Norman, OK - The Chouse (7" release with Samantha Crain)

October 25: Little Rock, AR - Whitewater Tavern (opening for John Moreland)

October 26: Hattiesburg, MS - Thirsty Hippo (opening for John Moreland)

October 28: Jackson, MS - Duling Hall (opening for John Moreland)

I have included links for the Illinois River Jam here, and tickets to the 7" split release show with Samantha Crain right here.

------------------------------------------------------

Besides touring with John Moreland, JCA has also begun writing the finishing touches for his next full length record, which he will be recording in December as the winter falls. Stay tuned here for more updates and always take care of you and yours in this wild world.

all our best to you.

Release Show Dates and Press Recap for Coyote, out May 18th.

Release Show Dates and Press Recap for Coyote, out May 18th.

We've been getting some great press from Coyote. Here's what some folks have had to say:

"Abney’s brand of Americana isn’t deeply rooted in country tinged crooners or twang. Rather, Abney's delievers soft and elegant moments reminiscent of Beck’s Sea Change, Ryan Adams‘ 29 and Elliott Smith’s Either/Or." - Wide Open Country

"Equal parts Elliott Smith and William Elliot Whitmore." - mxdwn

"Lush...dreamy." - The Boot

"Abney’s voice carries a world-weary sadness while simultaneously exuding optimism." - Glide Magazine

"9 out of 10...Abney is like a modern day Romantic poet, Wordsworth perhaps, (or Lord Byron – mad, bad and dangerous to know?) ... one of Oklahoma's finest comes up with the goods!" - Americana UK

The pre-order is almost over for Coyote. After May 10, orders will ship out as normal orders, after the May 18/19 release shows. There will be very limited quantities of pink vinyl at both of these shows, so if you're lucky enough to be in Tulsa at the Mercury Lounge on May 18, or The Blue Door in Oklahoma City on May 19, find the merch table fast, as we're sure these will go quickly. Pre-order at Black Mesa Records.

Peace and Love,

- Kris

Kind advance words for upcoming album, Coyote!

Kind advance words for upcoming album, Coyote!

"Abney’s brand of Americana isn’t deeply rooted in country tinged crooners or twang. Rather, Abney's delievers soft and elegant moments reminiscent of Beck’s Sea Change, Ryan Adams‘ 29 and Elliott Smith’s Either/Or...a blend of earnest balladry with an angelic and pensive soundscape that leans and sways with a comfortable ease"
-Wide Open Country (premiere of "Always Enough")

"Lush harmonies are layered over a dreamy groove..."
-The Boot (premiere of Get Your House In Order)

"Abney’s voice carries a world-weary sadness while simultaneously exuding optimism...slowburning tune feels reflective and hopeful...a rich sound perfectly suited to hit power pop vocals"
Glide Magazine (premiere of Every Now and Then)

Pre-order Coyote now on CD and limited carnation pink vinyl at Black Mesa Records website before it is released on May 18th.

Thanks a million for your ears and hearts. Look out of one another out there.

A year of touring, exploring, and writing culminating in a record, a 7" split, and boundless love.

A year of touring, exploring, and writing culminating in a record, a 7" split, and boundless love.

(photos by Chad Cochran)

This year has been one of the strangest, most grueling, and trying years of this planet. After performing over 125+ shows accompanying John Moreland, 70+ of personal tour dates, and traveling close to 70,000 miles over the past 365 days, I had a lot of stories, a lot of fears, a lot of love, and a lot of questions about why the world was being spread thin, why the folks running the show were letting greed and bigotry into the ranks of government, and if home would still be there when I got home.

The music was always there, and the teams I've worked with have been steadfast and true and unerring in their paths, and for that, I am lucky and thankful. From performing alongside John Prine and playing guitar on the Grand Ole Opry at the Ryman Auditorium to the full US tour supporting Iron and Wine and backing John Moreland behind the piano on the Jools Holland show on the BBC, working with Moreland's team has been a dream among dreams. In the new year, the duo is becoming a full band beginning in February!

Amongst all of the good times and hard work, I found some answers and wrote and created a record containing songs that I hold very dear to my heart. Recording in full at Fellowship Hall once again in Little Rock, I had the opportunity to work with Paddy Ryan on drums, Shonna Tucker on bass and vocals, and Megan Palmer on violin, keys, and vocals. This full length record is mixed, mastered, and slated for a late spring release, more information coming shortly. We created some magic and can't wait to share with you finally in 2018.

----------------------------------------------

Tim Easton and I recorded a 7" split of traveling songs that is coming out at the end of February. My track, "Full of Farewells", is on side B, and I recorded it to tape at my house in Oklahoma. Tim also recorded his song analog and at home in Nashville, TN. We hope you'll enjoy our tunes and check out the grand folks who run Different Folk records out of Sioux Falls, SD, who continue to put out excellent artists and songs.

----------------------------------------------

take care and happy new year.

-john and family.
